WHAT IS MINDFUL EATING?

Did you know that you can practice mindfulness through eating? Eating is one of the most important things you do for your body, because it brings nourishment. Sometimes, we can lose track of the importance of eating. For example, binging and watching TV. Even though that is a human thing to do, it is important to create a space for eating. Mindful eating is bringing awareness to what you’re consuming, and listening to your body’s cues.

Mindful eating can create a positive relationship with food and help you understand your body’s hunger cues. It also decreases the feeling of guilt or anxiety that may arise from eating, and decreases those feelings with appreciation and satisfaction.

How do you eat mindfully? It is simple:

When your body is telling you that you are hungry, listen to it.

Bring awareness to your senses when you eat. What does your food look like? How does your food smell and taste? What is the texture of your food? Does it create any sounds?

Bring awareness to the ingredients. Where did the ingredients come from? How was it prepared? Who made it?
Appreciate your meal. Express gratitude for whomever made it. If you prepared the meal, applaud yourself.

Eat food that will nourish you. Unhealthy food cannot properly nourish your body. The following foods have been proven to benefit your brain activity:
Fatty fish
Cacao
Coffee
Berries
Nuts
Complex carbohydrates
Eggs

Designate a space without distractions to eat, because you want to have sensory awareness.

Chew slowly, and allow the food to digest.

If your body is telling you that you’re full, listen to your body and stop eating.
