Insomnia

There are a few different types of insomnia, each with its own causes and patterns. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Acute Insomnia

  • Duration: Short-term (a few days to a few weeks)
  • Causes: Stress, life changes, illness, jet lag, a big event (e.g., job interview or exam)
  • Often resolves on its own

2. Chronic Insomnia

  • Duration: Long-term (at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more)
  • Causes: Ongoing stress, anxiety, depression, medical conditions, certain medications, poor sleep habits

3. Onset Insomnia

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Often linked to anxiety, racing thoughts, or inconsistent sleep schedule

4. Maintenance Insomnia

  • Trouble staying asleep
  • You wake up during the night and have difficulty falling back asleep
  • Could be related to depression, sleep apnea, or other health issues

5. Terminal Insomnia (Late Insomnia)

  • Waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep
  • Common in older adults and sometimes tied to depression

6. Comorbid Insomnia

  • Occurs alongside another condition like anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or substance use
